Impacts of S/U Grading on Scholarships & Financial Aid

If you are considering converting your course grading to Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) for the Spring 2020 semester, please keep in mind the potential impacts this may have on your scholarships and financial aid.

As intended, any S/U coursework will be excluded from your GPA calculation. Depending on your current GPA, this could affect your ability to renew your awards in the upcoming year.

For example, if you currently have a 2.9 UW GPA and you convert all your Spring 2020 courses to S/U grading, your UW GPA will remain a 2.9 when this semester ends because the courses will not have an associated letter grade. If you need to maintain at least a 3.0 to keep your scholarship(s), you will need to evaluate your current grade in each course to determine if you would benefit most from a letter grade or S/U. For assistance in calculating your GPA, use the Term Calculator or Advice Calculator, accessible via the WyoRecords Degree Evaluation, to see how many courses to keep as a letter grade.

If you are unsure of the GPA requirements for an award you are receiving, please refer back to the Renew Your Financial Aid page for details.

Students who are considering S/U grading for repeat coursework should contact their advisor or the Office of the Registrar for advice on the impacts to their cumulative GPA.

Completed Hours

S/U coursework will still be evaluated for Completed Hours requirements when determining scholarship and financial aid eligibility. All courses awarded Satisfactory (S) grades will count towards completed hours, while Unsatisfactory (U) grades will not count towards completed hours.

If you are unsure of the Completed Hours requirements for an award you are receiving, please refer back to the Renew Your Financial Aid page for details.
