Ethical Educator Program

Why Elevate Ethics Awareness?

The UW Ethical Educator Program provides pre-service educators with a foundation for ethical practices and decision-making to serve them throughout their careers and support the well-being of students, communities, and the profession.

Ethics training is needed not because education students are not ethical. Rather, it is a recognition that professional educators face complex challenges and interact within a myriad of relationships and settings over the course of a day and across the arc of their careers.

Educators engage with students, colleagues, parents, mentors, district personnel, administrators, and colleagues within their first years after entering professional practice. They prepare lessons and activities and teach in classrooms comprising students of diverse backgrounds, temperaments, and abilities. They tutor, coach teams, and advise clubs. They may travel with students to give them great experiences and opportunities.

The UW Ethical Educator Program is based on the Model Code of Ethics for Educators developed by the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education. The code grounds UW pre-service educators and their induction mentors by providing a common set of principles that support teachers and organizations.

Through the Trustees Education Initiative, these principles of ethics awareness are built into courses and the UW-E4® educator preparation model.

1.  Responsibility to the Profession

2.  Responsibility for Professional Competence

3.  Responsibility to Students

4.  Responsibility to the School Community

5.  Responsible and Ethical Use of Technology

Preparing for careers in an educator preparation program that emphasizes elevated standards for ethics awareness will enable UW graduates to practice the best of their profession and become preeminent educators, wherever they choose to practice.
