Presented in conjunction with Ralston Crawford: The Artist’s Eye, Ralston Crawford: Early Work explores the influences on Ralston Crawford’s (American, 1906 – 1978) early artistic development. Exposed to some of the foremost American and European artists while studying in Philadelphia (1927-1930), these influences are evident in Crawford’s artistic development. He studied the artwork of Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, George Braque, and Pablo Picasso, incorporating their use of bold lines and geometric planes into his own artistic explorations. Crawford’s early works retain naturalistic details, done in a painterly style reminiscent of Rembrandt or Francisco Goya, yet suggest his mature work with carefully organized compositions.
