Rebecca Dulaney

Rebecca “Becka” Dulaney is a senior studying music education in the Department of Music. She was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Sundance. Dulaney always had a fervor for music; she began singing in church and then learned to play the flute. During her high-school career, Dulaney participated in every musical ensemble that was available, while also taking multiple lessons.

At age 18, Dulaney traveled 222 miles to the University of Wyoming, where she has gained important leadership opportunities and friendships through involvement in groups such as The Western Thunder Marching Band, GEAR-UP, and the Bel Canto Women’s Choir. Dulaney credits her coursework with Associate Professor Anne Guzzo and Academic Professional Lecturer Jennifer Turpen as the pathway to understanding both herself and her interests in pursuing a higher education.

When Dulaney joined the UW McNair Program, she began her research with the idea of determining whether or not chance sounds are musical, but her interests quickly were broadened by different types of music philosophy. For future research, Dulaney hopes to focus on perception of lesser known musical genres. She presented her research at the National McNair Symposium.

Dulaney will graduate in 2020. She plans to apply to graduate schools that explore composition and written theory.
