The American Chemistry Society (ACS) is the primary professional organization for chemists. It was founded in 1876 and it currently has more than 160,000 members. ACS publishes numerous journals and sponsors local, regional, and national meetings. In addition, its Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) division generates the popular SciFinder database. ACS also provides valuable career services for its members. http://www.acs.org/content/acs/en.html
The Chemistry Department is one of the oldest departments on campus. It is mentioned prominently along with the Departments of Biology, Geology, Paleontology, and Physics in annual reports to the State that began soon after creation of the University in 1886. Today the Chemistry Department provides courses in Analytical, Biological, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical chemistry and it offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. It also houses a large number of state-of-the-art instrumentation to support cutting edge chemical research. http://www.uwyo.edu/chemistry/
