Dr. Emily Monago Biography

On July 17, 2017, Dr. Emily Ann Monago became the inaugural Chief Diversity Officer and founder of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of Wyoming. Her role includes providing leadership and collaborating widely to advance inclusive excellence, equity, and social justice initiatives. In collaboration with students, faculty, staff, and community members, the office developed the 2017-2022 UW Strategic Plan for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and she oversees its implementation. Highlights of other leadership roles include establishing recruitment and retention initiatives for diverse and underrepresented populations, founding a campus-wide restorative justice and practices programs and providing diversity education, and other campus-wide initiatives and programs.  Emily was selected as one of seven in the nation into the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE) Chief Diversity Officer Fellowship Program for 2020-2021. She is an alumnae of both the NASPA Alice Manicur Symposium (Class of 2016) and the American Council on Education (ACE) Spectrum Aspiring Leaders Program and ACE scholarship recipient (Class of 2015). Emily currently serves as the vice president for the Rocky Mountain Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (RMADOHE). RMADOHE includes the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.

Emily has more than 30 years of experience working at three different public universities. Most of her career-life has been dedicated to promoting and creating socially just communities as a means to generate a more equitable and inclusive society where everyone can find what they need to thrive. Her service as the co-director for the Social Justice Research Center during 2018-2019 with Dr. Eric Teman, assistant professor, School of Counseling, Leadership, Advocacy, and Design was an honor to support researchers dedicated to advancing all of these efforts. Today, she serves on the Social Justice Research Center Advisory Board and works very closely with the Center’s director. Emily is the founder of the Black 14 Social Justice Summer Institute for high school students. She co-directs this initiative with Dr. Kate Muir Welsh, associate professor, School of Teacher Education and director of the Social Justice Research Center. 

Prior to coming to the University of Wyoming, she served the director for the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio from July 2010 to July 2017. This role included supervising staff who provided leadership for the Ethnic Student Center and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center.

In July 2016, Emily received a promotion to Interim Administrator-in-Charge for Access, Diversity, and Inclusion at Bowling Green State University. In this role, she maintained her leadership role as director for OMA and added to her portfolio the supervision of four leaders for four different federally funded TRIO Programs for underserved populations’ access to higher education; the director of the Women’s Center; and coordinator for Project Search: A retention program for diverse and underrepresented graduate students.

In 2012, the Honorable Richard A. Edwards, Mayor of the City of Bowling Green appointed Emily to serve on the City’s Human Relations Commission. Where she honorably and faithfully served on the Commission and held various leadership roles such as vice-chair (2013-2016) and co-chair (2016-2017). She also served on or chaired several other executive and community boards to advance issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice.

Emily holds a Bachelor's degree in General Studies, and Master's degree in Public Administration, both from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio and a Ph.D. in Communication Studies (Organizational Communication) from Bowling Green State University.  She resides in Laramie with her family. Emily and her spouse have two children who both graduated from the University of Wyoming. One with a Master’s degree in 2019 and the other with a Bachelor’s degree in 2020.
