College of Education

2015 Lola B. Newcomb Beginning Teacher Support Grant application now available

Applications for a College of Education grant that supports early career professional development for new teachers are now available.

The Lola B. Newcomb Beginning Teacher Support Grant is open to all UW College of Education graduates, working in Wyoming school districts, who are teaching for the first time in the 2014-15 school year. The Newcomb Grant allows beginning teachers to select a mentoring program to continue to build the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the classroom.

Participants will receive a grant to provide mentoring to them in their classrooms during the academic school year. Representative activities include attending a professional meeting in their curricular area, visiting other classrooms, or inviting mentors to their classrooms. Grant funds may be used for travel expenses, substitute teacher expenses (while participating in professional development activities or visits to mentor classrooms), classroom equipment, additions to a classroom library, or field trips. The overall plan must include a mentoring plan to increase the knowledge and teaching skills of the beginning teacher. All purchases or activities also must relate to that goal.

Each grant is valued at $1,000.

Recipients of the 2015 Lola B. Newcomb Beginning Teacher Support Grant will be asked to share their experiences with current students and faculty, so that everyone may benefit from their mentoring experience. Grant recipients must be available to visit the Laramie campus on Monday, Sept. 14, 2015, for those presentations.

Deadline for the 2015 Lola B. Newcomb Beginning Teacher Support Grant is 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9.
