Future art educators experience professional development at Colorado conference

Five University of Wyoming art education students and College of Education faculty member Lydia Dambekalns attended the Colorado Art Education Association (CAEA) annual conference in Breckenridge Colo., Nov. 12-14, 2015.

Student conference participants attended breakout sessions where they  learned about new artistic media on the market, ways to incorporate art history and aesthetics into our teaching, various methods of assessing students, and all about art advocacy at a district and state level. They also attended the keynote address by Mondo Guerra,  a Denver-based fashion designer and Project Runway finalist.

Networking opportunities included meeting other pre-service students from Colorado, and established art teachers from Colorado. Several mentor teachers from Cheyenne also attended the conference, which  underscored for our students the importance of continuing professional development.

Finally, the conference provided a bonding experience for the students and Damekalns.

“This is the sort of bond that I know from past experience will hold up in their future interactions and professional lives,” Lydia says of the trip.

Students attending the conference were Kathleen Backman, Alyssa Benning, Staylee Brown, Haley Stebbins, and Brigitte Zumbo.

“I think this conference was a great experience to extend our learning through our methods classes. One huge example I see is how in the new national standards we are expected to not only teach techniques, but art history, criticism, etc. So, at a conference like this, there are ample opportunities to learn new and exciting and successful ways to do these things,” Backman says.
