Jonah Energy LLC recently awarded the University of Wyoming, School of Energy Resources
Air Quality Center of Excellence, a gift of $100,000 to support the continuation of
the center's work regarding emissions from oil and gas exploration and production
activities.
The gift is intend to support research that strengthens the accuracy of engineering
calculations of emissions by ground truth with a variety of measurement platforms,
including a dedicated mobile laboratory.
Since 2009 researchers from UW have investigated the importance of emissions in the
Upper Green River Basin, in particular the Jonah Field and Pinedale Anticline development
areas. This work has resulted in numerous academic publications and has supported
State led efforts to better understand wintertime ozone formation and basin wide emissions
of methane.
Craig Manaugh, President of Jonah Energy remarked that “Minimizing emissions from
oil and gas development through better scientific understanding, maintaining current
operating practices and implementing new technology are important goals. We believe
this grant, and the research it will fund, will help to advance those goals.”
According to one of the lead researchers in this area Dr. Robert Field, “field measurements
of emissions will reduce uncertainty that impacts our ability to model wintertime
ozone and the support of Jonah Energy will allow us to gather information that will
improve our current understanding.”
“Wyoming is a leader with respect to air quality assessments of oil and gas impacts
and this gift strengthens our research efforts, stated Assistant Professor Shane Murphy,
the Director of the Air Quality Center. The gift will fund field campaigns during
2017 that support student research at the University of Wyoming.
