Prof. Dr. Thomas Risse is the Director of the Center for Transnational Relations, Foreign and Security Policy at the Otto-Suhr-Institute of Political Science at the Freie Universität Berlin.

He received his Ph.D. (summa cum laude) from the University of Frankfurt after previously completing studies of political science and economics at the Institute d'Etudes Politiques in Paris, his M.A. in Political Science at the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelm Universität in Bonn, and studies of political science, social science, and Catholic theology also in Bonn.  From 1997-2001 he was Joint Chair of International Relations at the European University Institute's Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and the Department of Social and Political Sciences in Florence, Italy.  His previous teaching and research appointments include the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt, the University of Konstanz, as well as Cornell, Harvard, Yale and Stanford Universities, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and the University of Wyoming. 

Dr. Risse is coordinator of the Collaborative Research Center "Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood" and co-director of the Research College "Transformative Power of Europe," both funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).  He was previously a member of the UW Center for Global Studies' External Advisory Board prior to the creation of the IAC in 2019.
