Mercury has the following options:

None: (This is the default.) No post-combustion mercury control is used.

Carbon Injection: Some mercury removal is accomplished naturally in a power plant. It is believed that some mercury is captured or trapped in ash and is removed with bottom ash and fly ash. Carbon injection is provided as a technology to achieve higher removals by injecting fine particles of activated carbon into the flue gas after the air preheater. This option requires some form of particulate control to assure the removal of the injected carbon immediately downstream of the air preheater. (See Mercury parameters and Mercury results for more details.)
