What is Office 365?
By Alec Muthig
All UW students and staff have access to Office 365, a powerful set of online, cloud-based tools that are ideal for working on the go and collaborating with others. With Office 365, you can log in from any Internet-connected device to send email, set up appointments, or upload or create new documents or spreadsheets, and then easily share them with colleagues, including those without UW email addresses.
To access Office 365, login using your UW email address and password.
By logging into your Office 365 account, you can also download the Office suite on up to 5 personal devices for free. This includes programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Access, Publisher, Outlook, Lync, and InfoPath. For continued access, the Office suite needs to connect to Office 365 every 30 days. View the IT knowledgebase for installation instructions.
Office 365 Feature Spotlight: OneDrive and Power BI
OneDrive for Business is the free, cloud file storage included in UW’s Office 365 service for faculty, staff, and students, which allows users to store, sync, and share files across multiple devices. UW students and staff have 1 TB online storage space available in the OneDrive for Business cloud. Files stored in OneDrive are available from any Internet-connected device. Edit a PowerPoint presentation or an Excel budget spreadsheet in your office, and it is ready to be presented in class or a meeting without needing to carry a flash-drive. In addition, you can give colleagues or students the ability to view or edit files using OneDrive’s sharing capabilities. As documents are edited by your team, OneDrive will even keep a version history, allowing older document versions to easily be accessed and restored. Lastly, OneDrive also acts as a convenient offsite location for backup copies of important files. You should always be backing up your data.
To access OneDrive, enter your UW username and password.
A combination of Microsoft Excel, Statistical Analysis Software, and PowerPoint, Microsoft’s new “Power BI” is a great resource for UW students and staff. Power BI is a cloud-based business analytics service that enables users to access and visualize data in a new way. It could be a basic business SWOT analysis, yearly revenue model, a geographic distribution of product sales, or almost anything involving tracking numbers and categories. To access Power BI, enter your UW username and password or select the Power BI app if you are already signed into Office 365
