Computer Workshop Descriptions

UW employees are eligible to request access to the Lynda.com online self-paced training courses.

Information Technology offers instructor-led computer software training – classes are open to all UW faculty, staff, and students. All instructor-led workshops are held in the Information Technology Center, with one person per computer.

Registration: If you are interested in attending one of the training courses listed, you can reserve a seat by finding the course in the schedule(http://www.uwyo.edu/infotech/services/training/schedule.asp) and clicking the "Register" button. This will take you to the PeopleSoft HRMS site where you can register online for the class and pay with either a departmental P-card or a personal credit card (if paying with a P-card in your name, choose the "Self-Pay" option. If the P-card is under a supervisor's name, choose the "Department Pay" option. Also make sure pop-ups are enabled on this page.) You can also register for a course by sending an IDR or personal check to the IT Front Desk, Information Technology Center. Please include the participant’s name as well as the name and number of the training course.

Access 2013: Introduction
The aim of this introductory level class is to make databases understandable, and allow the participants to create a database from scratch. Topics to be covered include: database concepts, planning and designing databases, relating tables, changing the design of a table, basic queries, and basic forms and reports.

Access 2013 Intermediate
The Access 2013 Intermediate course will provide in-depth information on queries, forms, and reports. Topics to be covered include: basic queries, complex and advanced queries; creating forms and advanced form design; and working with reports and printing.

Access 2013 Advanced
The advanced class will explore features of Access to help the user customize and better manage their Access database. Topics include: importing, exporting, and linking data; optimizing and protecting databases; and creating basic and advanced macros.

Excel 2013: Intermediate
This course teaches students how to manage large sets of data efficiently. Topics covered include working with multiple worksheets and workbooks, advanced formatting, consolidating and outlining data, creating subtotals, protecting worksheets, and using logical, conditional, and lookup functions. Excel 2013 Tips and Tricks
This 90-minute course will cover a variety of topics to help participants use Excel 2013 more efficiently. Tips to be covered include conditional formatting, keyboard shortcuts, logical formulas, absolute references, charts, formatting options, and preparing for printing.

Excel 2013 Macros/VBA
This advanced level class will delve into using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to create, run, and edit macros.
Topics include developing macros, creating macros to format worksheets, designing an interactive worksheet, using macros to work with multiple worksheets, and creating user-defined functions.

Excel Spreadsheets: Foundations
This introductory level class teaches the basic functions and features of Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet application. Topics to be covered include workbook navigation and formatting, working with columns and rows, entering/editing data, copying/moving data, number styles, page setup and printing options, and basic formulas.(duration: 6 hours split between two sessions)

Excel Spreadsheets: Formulas & Functions
This foundational level workshop explores the use of formulas to perform calculations in Excel spreadsheets. Topics include general formula building, types of cell addresses, and common functions. This is a great place to start learning about performing dynamic, effective calculations in your spreadsheets! (prerequisites: none; duration: 90 minutes plus a 30 minute optional lab immediately following)

Excel Spreadsheets: Conditional Formulas
This workshop covers the use of very powerful conditional functions in Excel spreadsheets, including IF, SUMIF, AVERAGEIF, COUNTIF, and logical operators (OR, AND, NOT).  These functions greatly increase the flexibility of your formulas by allowing for variable outcomes.  (***prerequisites: at least a foundational working knowledge of Excel spreadsheets; the Excel Spreadsheets: Foundations workshop meets these requirements; duration: 90 minute session, with an optional 30 minute lab immediately following)

Excel Spreadsheets: Lookup Formulas
This workshop covers the use of very powerful lookup functions in Excel spreadsheets, including VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, LOOKUP, INDEX, and MATCH.  These functions allow you to search for specific data in a spreadsheet, return related data, and assist in effective data analysis.  (***prerequisites: at least a foundational working knowledge of Excel spreadsheets; the Excel Spreadsheets: Foundations workshop meets these requirements; duration: 90 minute session, with an optional 30 minute lab immediately following)

Excel Spreadsheets: Pivot Tables & Data Modeling
This intermediate/advanced level course provides in-depth information on creating, managing, and effectively using Pivot Tables for enhanced data analysis and reporting in Excel spreadsheets.  Data modeling, a new feature in Excel, allows related data from different sources to be pulled together into a single point of analysis.  Filters, slicers, Pivot Charts and the PowerPivot add-in will also be examined.  (***prerequisites: at least an intermediate level knowledge of Excel spreadsheets; duration: 3 hours)

Getting Started with Excel
Developed with the beginner in mind, this 90-minute hands-on session is a great way to become more comfortable using spreadsheet software. The low-key approach will cover basic Excel functionality and examine what can be done with this powerful tool.

Excel Spreadsheets: Conditional Formatting
This workshop explores the use of conditional formatting features in MS Excel spreadsheets.  Conditional formatting can be used to adjust the appearance of spreadsheet segments based on a set of criteria, and can be used to identify specific values, rank values, search for duplicates, and more.  (***prerequisites: at least a foundational working knowledge of Excel spreadsheets)

Excel Online Surveys
This brief workshop examines how to build surveys using the University’s Office 365 Excel Online application.  We will also examine how to access and analyze survey response data stored in the OneDrive cloud.  This is a great tool for deploying basic surveys and questionnaires!

Slurm Job Scheduling
Leveraging the ARCC high performance computing systems requires understanding of how to submit compute jobs effectively and efficiently for various workflows. Individual workloads (group, user, and application) can vary widely. There are key steps to creating a successful job submission patterns to the cluster to minimize wait time, maximize performance, and increase throughput. The presentation will cover basic compute node architecture and how to submit jobs to leverage different workloads including: distributed memory jobs, shared memory jobs, hybrid jobs, many jobs, GPU jobs, and interactive computing jobs.
