Attending Class

Attending Class:

  1. Need the textbook?  Talk to Makayla, she will get you a copy.

  2. Talk to the instructor before you start attending class – what role (if any) does s/he want you to play in class?

  3. Does the instructor want you to do any presentations in class? Some possible presentation topics include:
    • Time Management
    • Challenges and Successes (could also be a panel of students)
    • Classroom Etiquette/Communicating with Faculty
    • Getting Involved on Campus/in Laramie
    • Others?

  4. Model outstanding student behavior (no phones, take notes, etc)

  5. Have discussions with students after class about what they learned during the lecture.  This increases retention of material and creates the atmosphere for academic conversations.  (this can be informal, as you’re walking back to the Resident Halls).  Some questions you could ask:
    • What was the Big Idea from the lecture?  That is, if they could only take home one thing from the information presented, what would it be? Ask each student to offer a different "take home."
    • Is there an upcoming reading, exam, paper, or homework assignment?  Discuss approaches to research, preparing for exams, etc.
    • Have students share something they learned and something they have a question about.
    • Ask students to come up with a real-life application example for what they learned in lecture.
