Common Reading

Common Reading:

  1. Common Readings give you and your residents an opportunity to discuss something academic (related to the FIG) in a no-stakes environment (meaning, there is no grade or penalty for not completing it).

  2. Common Readings ≠ Textbooks.  A Common Reading can include:
    • Book
    • Podcast
    • Ted Talk
    • Book on CD
    • Newspaper/Magazine Article
    • Youtube Video
    • Others?

  3. Talk to your faculty person about recommendations and/or if they want to participate in the reading and discussion.

  4. Students will most likely feel like they're doing enough reading in their classes, so may not be immediately on board with a Common Reading in the FIG.  In order to increase buy-in:
    • Select a very short or very engaging text.  Articles or chapters are ideal here.
    • Provide your residents with copies (don't expect them to get it themselves).  Ask Makalya if you want copies of a material for your students.
    • It's ideal to do this within the first couple weeks of class

  5. Be sure to have a set time for the Reading to be complete.  Develop discussion questions and be sure to invite any faculty, staff, or community members that you think would add to the discussion.
