Digital Initiatives

The mission of the UW Libraries Digital Collections Office is to help foster, create, and preserve open data, research, and scholarship at the University of Wyoming. The Digital Collections Office has two primary responsibilities. The first is collection building and digitization, and the second is supporting UW’s scholarly output. Faculty and staff are happy to consult and work with the University of Wyoming community on a variety of projects.

Digital Collections operates and maintains the various Libraries digital repositories, including our digital collections, research data, and scholarly outputs. They also work to preserve and convert analog content of all kinds to digital formats. The ultimate goal of these efforts are the open and broad dissemination of information online. Learn more about our Digital Collections.

The second area of emphasis is supporting scholarly output, mainly through our work with the Digital Scholarship team. A new service operating within UW Libraries, the DSC provides technology and training for work on digital projects by UW community members.

digitization services

The Digital & Distinctive Collections group offers digitization services for UW faculty, students, and staff on a case-by-case basis.  We primarily digitize materials which can be made openly available online in our WyoDigital repository with exceptions.  Since we work with content that can be openly accessible, we must abide by U.S. Copyright Law

We can digitize a variety of formats and sizes ranging from slide negatives all the way to large maps (up to 54" in one dimension).  Other examples include ephemera, newspapers, books, pamphlets, photographs, reports, et alia.  We can also digitize objects in 3D using a method called photogrammetry.  Again, there are limits to objects we can digitize in 3D, but we can work with small vertebrate specimens the size of a human fingernail to life-size sculptures, such as the T-Rex in front of the UW Geological Museum.

If you are embarking on a digitization project of your own and would simply like to consult with us, we are happy to lend our expertise and time.

In addition, we occasionally offer digitization workshops to teach others to use our collections in research and to build 3D models using photogrammetry, for example.

If you are interested in learning something specific, please don't hesitate to contact us. Please send all digitization inquiries to digcol@uwyo.edu.

Digital Scholarship

Digital Scholarship, as part of the University Libraries, aims to assist the University of Wyoming community as they extend traditional methods of research and teaching using new media and digital technologies. By providing expertise, technology, and space for these endeavors, Digital Scholarship will support faculty, staff, and students as they become more digital, entrepreneurial, interdisciplinary, and inclusive.
