Faculty Emeriti

Denny Coon

Dennis Coon

Emeritus Professor

dcoon@uwyo.edu

Dennis N. Coon, PhD, PE, earned his BS from Alfred University and his MS and PhD degrees from the Pennsylvania State University. Before joining the University of Wyoming, he worked as a Senior Scientist at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. His research interests focused on advanced materials, including metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites, with a particular interest in the long-term durability of materials in extreme environments. In the classroom, he taught courses in materials science, failure analysis, mechanical design, manufacturing processes, experimental methods, statistical analysis of engineering data, and engineering management. He also served administrative appointments as Undergraduate Program Coordinator in Mechanical Engineering, Interim Department Head of Chemical Engineering, and Interim Department Head of Petroleum Engineering. Late in his career, he served as the H. T. Person Professor focused on engineering education methods. He retired from UW after 34 years.

Paul Dellenback

Paul Dellenback

Emeritus Professor

PAD@uwyo.edu

Paul holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Arizona State University, and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a B.S. in Engineering Physics from Texas Tech University. His research interests were mostly in the areas of experimental thermal and fluid science, including optical diagnostics, convective heat transfer in highly turbulent flows and swirling flows, and thermodynamic modeling of novel gas turbine engine cycles. Paul served 8 years as Department Head of ME, and 5 years as an Associate Dean for Advancement within the college. He was the architect of the Energy Systems Engineering program that was introduced in 2009.

Bruce Dewey

Bruce A. Dewey

Emeritus Professor

Bruce Dewey’s technical expertise in engineering mechanics, engineering applications of computers, and development of collaborative learning communities was an asset to the department of Mechanical Engineering. Bruce served as Assistant Dean of the College of Engineering and Director of the Engineering Science Program as well as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He retired from the ME Department in 2002.

Andy Hansen

Andrew Hansen

Emeritus Professor

hansen@uwyo.edu

I spent 30 years in academia, focusing on material modeling and failure analysis of high performance composite materials. In 2000, I successfully launched Firehole Technologies, a software company devoted to predicting composite failure in structures exposed to severe loading environments. In 2016, we launched Teton Simulation Software, an advanced materials simulation company devoted to optimizing structural performance 3D printed parts. Both Firehole and Teton were acquired by public companies. During my career at UW, I also had several administrative appointments including, among others, Department Head, Associate Dean, and Associate Provost

Gus Plumb

Gus A. Plumb

Emeritus Professor

GPlumb@uwyo.edu

Ovid A. “Gus” Plumb held a B.S. in and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Colorado State University, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from SUNY Buffalo. His technical expertise was in heat and mass tranfer, fluid mechanics, plasma processes in porous media. Gus served as Dean of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences" from 1999 to 2007. He retired from the ME Department in 2008.

Dave Walrath

David. E. Walrath

Emeritus Professor

Walrath@uwyo.edu

David E. Walrath, PhD, PE, earned his BS and MS degrees from the University of Wyoming and his PhD from the University of Delaware. His background is in composite materials analysis, testing, and processing, as well as design. He served as a research engineer at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio before returning to UW as part of Professor Adams’ Composite Materials Research Group. He later joined the UW faculty. During his career he assisted small Wyoming companies in product development and in submitting and completing Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) projects to develop and market their product ideas. He retired as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering, but later returned to be interim director of the NIST MEP center Manufacturing Works before retiring after 40 years with UW.
