Tim Slater Named to NRC Committee

May 17, 2010

Tim Slater, the University of Wyoming's Excellence in Higher Education Endowed Chair of Science Education, has been appointed to the National Research Council's Committee on Status, Contributions, and Future Directions of Discipline Based Education Research (DBER).

The committee will answer questions that are essential to advancing DBER and broadening its impact on science teaching and learning at the undergraduate level in physics, biological sciences, geosciences and chemistry.

The study will synthesize empirical research on undergraduate teaching and learning in the sciences; examine the extent to which this research influences undergraduate science instruction, and describe the intellectual and material resources that are required to further develop DBER.

The NRC, administered jointly by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine, provides elected leaders, policy makers and the public with expert advice based on sound scientific evidence.

Slater serves on the Board of Directors of the National Science Teachers Association. He has been the education officer for the American Astronomical Society, an elected member of the Board of Directors for the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and an elected councilor at large for the Society of College Science Teachers.
