The University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance will perform this season's final dance concert, "The Unknown Exposed," featuring new contemporary ballet, jazz and modern dance works, March 1-3 at 7:30 p.m. in the UW Arts and Sciences auditorium.
Tickets cost $14 for the public, $11 for seniors and $7 for students. For tickets and information, call (307) 766-6666 or go online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.
Showcasing the department's finest dancers, "The Unknown Exposed" will feature original works by dance faculty members Lawrence Jackson, Jennifer Deckert and Margaret Wilson, with additional works by Maurice Watson and Andre Megerdichian.
Jackson's contemporary piece, "Exurgency," will open the concert. Set to the music of composer Zoe Keating, it explores the theme of bringing to light that which had been previously wholly hidden or only obscurely seen.
Guest artist Watson choreographed "Boundaries," a piece exploring the theme of female empowerment. It's an immersion of jazz and contemporary movement that is very athletic while simultaneously exploring female sensuality.
Wilson's piece, "Enscribing Space," is a new work set on 11 dancers who use their bodies and channel movement to create a visual ‘hold' in space. The work is designed to be an abstract visual puzzle that rearranges itself in different patterns throughout.
Megerdichian's contemporary modern dance, "Game of Thorns," will close out the concert's first half. This work is a group composition of four dancers who come alive to Keating's music.
Deckert will be featured in two works during the concert's second half. "Cicorium Intybus" will be performed as a contemporary ballet piece set to the music of Dvorak. "Footfalls Echo," a contemporary duet set to the music of Sigur Ros, emphasizes the necessary balance within a relationship.
The concert will end with a premiere of Jackson's contemporary piece "Night Run," set to the music of Rene Aubry and Karl Jenkins. This athletic work involves a great deal of physicality, agility and strength from the dancers.
