Online registration is now being accepted for a Building Tribal Nations symposium April 8-9 at the University of Wyoming Conference Center at the Hilton Garden Inn in Laramie.

The UW American Indian Studies Program is organizing the symposium, which focuses on factors that are fundamental for a Native American tribal group to be a nation.

Support from the Wyoming Excellence in Higher Education Endowment, provided by the Wyoming State Legislature, makes it possible to offer the symposium free of charge to all attendees, but pre-registration is required. To register, visit the UW American Indian Studies website at https://www.uwyo.edu/aist/ and click “Building Tribal Nations Symposium” on the left-side navigation bar.

“There are a number of tangible aspects to nation building -- developing a governance structure, establishing a strong economic base and fostering intergovernmental relationships -- as well as significant spiritual, psychological and cultural aspects,” says Judith Antell, director of the UW American Indian Studies Program. “They all contribute to the future of Native American tribes.”

Confirmed speakers for the Building Tribal Nations symposium are Cheryl Crazy Bull, president and CEO of the American Indian College Fund; Walter Echo-Hawk, an attorney and author; LaDonna Harris, a political activist; Darrell Kipp, co-founder of the Piegan Institute, dedicated to preserving Native languages; and David Wilkins, American Indian Studies faculty member at the University of Minnesota.

Persons participating in the symposium may be eligible to earn Professional Teaching Standards Board or Continuing Legal Education credits.
