Tough Weekend for UW Teams at Gillette College Rodeo

A rough outing at last weekend’s Gillette College rodeo dropped the University of Wyoming women out of one of the top two positons in the overall standings just when the Cowgirls were on their best roll in four years.

The Cowgirls scored just 70 points for their lowest output of the season to finish ninth in the team standings in the latest Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR) competition. The UW women moved to third in the CRMR, as the host Pronghorns have separated themselves from the rest of the field.

Gillette College won its own rodeo with its best showing of the season with 405 points to widen its overall CRMR lead with 2,078.3 points. Moving back into second place in the region was Northeastern Junior College with 1,538 points, while the Cowgirls fell to third place, 73 points behind the Sterling, Colo. school.

Only the top two teams in the final regional standings send full teams to the year-end College National Finals Rodeo.

Sheridan College finished second behind the Pronghorns in the second of five CRMR spring rodeos with 265 points, and Casper College placed third with 210.

UW’s top finisher was Pavillion’s Josee Vogel, who placed sixth in the goat tying average to score 50 team points. Her first go round time was good enough for third place, but she didn’t place in the short go.

Vogel also scored the team’s final 20 points, placing sixth in the breakaway roping average.

The UW Cowboys also had a rough weekend, placing eighth with 140 team points in the final team standings at Gillette. Again, the host Pronghorns won the men’s side of the competition with 630 points, while CRMR leader Chadron State College scored 495 and Laramie Community College was third at 445.

UW bulldogger Dillon Simonson, of Purdum, Neb., got back into the scoring column, placing fifth in the steer wrestling average on the strength of an opening round win. However, he didn’t place in the short go, but his first-round time helped boost him in the average.

Miles City, Mont., bull rider Jess Davison placed for the first time in the event, finishing sixth in the average. UW’s final points were scored by Casper’s Brock Wahlert, who scored 40 points in bareback riding. However, he did not place in the average after marking third in the opening round.

Chadron State remains the overall regional leader with 3,590 points, while Gillette College bypassed two teams to climb into second place with 2,435 points. Eastern Wyoming College slipped to third place with 2,197 points, and Casper College dropped to fourth with 2,083.3.

Teams are off for the Easter holiday, and action resumes April 8-10 with the Colorado State University rodeo.
