Matthew Inkster is the guest conductor for the UW Symphony Orchestra, which performs Thursday, March 24.

A homecoming will take place for the guest conductor of the University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra’s concert Thursday, March 24.

Matthew Inkster, a UW and Laramie High School graduate, now conducting at Ithaca College in New York, will be back on the UW campus to conduct the UW Symphony Orchestra in its “Rhapsody and Romance” concert Thursday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts.

Tickets are available at the Performing Arts Center and UW Union box offices, by calling (307) 766-666, or going online to www.uwyo.edu/finearts. The cost is $10 for the public, $7 for seniors and $6 for students.

Inkster and the orchestra will open the concert with Dvořák’s “My Home Overture,” full of popular melodies from Dvořák’s native Bohemia.

Music in the program is from Eastern Europe and includes folk music of the region. Also, during the concert, are works by Hungarian composers Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály.

The ensemble will perform Bartók’s “First Rhapsody” for violin and orchestra and, after intermission, will return to the solo violin with “Romance” for violin and orchestra by Dvořák.

Sherry Sinift will play solo violin during the March 24 concert.

The symphony will close the concert with music from Kodály’s comic folk opera, “Háry János.” The score contains at least one Hungarian folk song and a native courtship dance.

Playing the solo violin with the orchestra is UW faculty violinist Sherry Sinift. She has served as concertmaster of the Fox Valley Symphony, the Milwaukee Opera Company, the Milwaukee Civic Symphony and the Skylight Opera Company.

Her extensive chamber music experience includes performances with the Summit Chamber Players at UW as well as many regional concert series; a tour of Spain; appearances on Wisconsin Public Radio’s “Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem”; and performances with the Hawthorne Quartet.

Sinift also is a violin and viola teacher, and an advocate for string education for pre-college students. She is founder and director of the String Academy of Wyoming and a supervising teacher for the UW String Project. The two programs serve more than 100 young string players in Laramie.

The UW Symphony Orchestra has invited a cimbalom player for this concert. Igor Iachimciuc lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, but learned the cimbalom in his native Moldova.

New this year in the concert hall are “Tweet Seats.” Audience members who like to stay connected to social media are welcome -- silently -- to post their comments and share their experiences online. “Tweet Seats” are available only in the back two rows of the auditorium.
