Just like their football counterparts, the University of Wyoming club hockey team members downed the Air Force Falcons 5-3 in the team’s regular season opener Sunday at the Laramie Ice and Events Center.
Air Force struck first on a power play late in the first period, but the Pokes answered quickly when Dan Franks, from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, tied the game at the 1:01 point of the first period. The Cowboys then found themselves down again in the second period until the power play struck once again when Jeremy Miller, from Casper, scored to tie the game.
Ryan Bergerman, from Chestermere, Alberta, Canada, scored to put the Pokes ahead and, from there, UW never looked back. The Cowboys would tally another power play goal shortly after that on a score from Ryan Baer, of Fort Collins, Colo.
The Pokes’ power play would end up going 3 for 4 on the day. Goaltender Scott Romano, from Cheshire, Conn., was tough in the net, stopping several Air Force scoring opportunities.
The team hosts Metro State College, of Denver, Friday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. in the Laramie Ice and Events Center.
The Cowboys club hockey team warmed up for its first match of the season with a 10-5 victory against a UW alumni team last Friday.
The game was fast-tempo in the early going with Zachary Lacombe, from Minnetonka, Minn., scoring the first of his two goals for the club team in the early stages of the first period, followed by two goals from Brayden Dawson, from Windsor, Colo.
The scoring didn’t stop there for the Pokes when Alec Macdougall, from Broomall, Pa., added two more goals, scoring once in the second and third periods. The only power play goal that was scored in the alumni game was by Craig Small, from Champion, Pa., in the later stages of the third period.
