Bryan Shader, a University of Wyoming professor of mathematics and special assistant for research computing, has been named to the Scientific Advisory Board of the Applied Algebra and Optimization Research Center (AORC) at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul, South Korea.

Shader’s appointment began Aug. 15 and will run for seven years.

The newly formed AORC is funded by South Korea’s National Research Foundation and Ministry of Science. The center will promote collaborative research among mathematicians and practitioners. Mathematical areas of interest include combinatorial matrix theory, matrix analysis combinatorics, graph theory, optimization, data analysis, coding theory, cryptography and their applications to data science and information security.

“This will afford many opportunities to establish or deepen collaborations with researchers across the globe,” Shader says. “Additionally, it will provide opportunities to be at the forefront of emerging topics in important mathematical applications.”

The AORC has or is in the process of developing cooperative partnerships with the International Research Center for Tensor and Matrix Theory at Shanghai University, the Center for Discrete Applied Mathematics at Rutgers University, the College of Combinatorics and Optimization at the University of Waterloo, and the Center for Data Analytics at Georgia Institute of Technology.

The committee will advise the center on topics for workshops and select postdoctoral students and visiting scholars. Additionally, the center will host several conferences and workshops each year, at least one of which Shader anticipates attending.

Along with Shader, the Scientific Advisory Board consists of research faculty from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Kyungpook National University, the University of Manitoba, the College of William and Mary, Georgia Institute of Technology, Rutgers University and the Chinese Academy of Science.
