Sen. Barrasso Staffer to Visit UW Herbarium

Jamie Gronski, U.S. Sen. John Barrasso’s field representative in Cheyenne, will visit the University of Wyoming’s Rocky Mountain Herbarium Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 1:30 p.m. as part of the Biological Sciences Congressional District Visits program.

The congressional visits are part of an initiative organized by the American Institute of Biological Sciences.

The nationwide event facilitates meetings between scientists and their elected officials in local settings rather than in Washington, D.C., or a state capital. The program allows lawmakers to learn, firsthand, about the science and research facilities in their respective districts, and the importance that federal funding research has in supporting these facilities and the research being conducted.

The Rocky Mountain Herbarium, located adjacent to the Aven Nelson Building, was founded in 1893 by Nelson. The herbarium contains the largest collection of Rocky Mountain plants and fungi in existence with additional representation of the floras of other parts of the Northern Hemisphere. It ranks 17th in the nation with 825,000 specimens -- with approximately 25,000 new specimens added each year -- and is the largest facility of its kind between St. Louis, Mo., and Berkeley, Calif.

“The Rocky Mountain Herbarium is a crown jewel of Wyoming’s natural history museum collections, and this congressional district visit provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the significance that federally funded research has played in the development of UW’s herbarium,” says Greg Brown, UW botany professor, and the College of Arts and Sciences associate dean who heads UW’s Science Initiative.

Gronski will meet with the herbarium management team, led by curator Ernie Nelson; Larry Schmidt, UW librarian; Dorothy Tuthill, UW Biodiversity Institute associate director; and Bonnie Heidel, Wyoming Natural Diversity Database lead botanist.
