A public memorial service for longtime University of Wyoming rodeo club Coach George Howard is planned Saturday, Dec. 2, at 1 p.m. at UW’s Cliff and Martha Hansen Livestock Teaching Arena, 306 Highway 230, 2 miles west of Laramie. Refreshments will follow the service.

Howard, 59, died Sunday, Nov. 26, in a Casper hospital.

During his 20 years as UW’s head coach, Howard’s women’s team won the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) twice, in 2007 and 2009, and finished second in 2017. His Cowgirls program also collected four third-place finishes at the year-end CNFR. The UW women’s program won eight Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR) team championships.

The UW men had one national runner-up finish in 2003 and two third-place finishes at the CNFR during Howard’s tenure. His Cowboy men’s teams won four CRMR team championships.

During his UW career, Howard coached 10 individual national champions, a mix of both men’s and women’s team members.

Howard’s 35-year career included seven national team titles with Dodge City Community College and Southwest Oklahoma State University, where he served as assistant coach, and the two championships with UW.

He is survived by his wife, Julie; daughters Chyann (Troy) Brandemeuhl and Brooke (Brian) Bulgrin; and grandchildren Brynn Bulgrin, Levi Brandemuehl and Braydee George Bulgrin.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the George Howard Memorial Scholarship Fund at Security First Bank in Laramie, 608 Grand Ave.
