UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports that, with the success of “The World Needs More Cowboys” marketing campaign, UW has spent just 20 percent of the $750,000 it plans to expend on the campaign by February. About 80 percent of the campaign focuses on internet advertising, including YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram and search engines.

Matthew Shepard’s murder 20 years ago is still remembered today. Many news outlets around the world printed various articles, including a special 10-page edition in The Casper Star-Tribune.

The Gillette News Record reported that Wyoming, which includes UW representatives, and Taiwanese officials are excited about the future after both sides met at the state’s new trade office in Taiwan.

Speaking at a conference in Gillette, Michael Pishko, dean of UW’s College of Engineering and Applied Science, said that diversifying the economy in Campbell County and the rest of the state does not mean moving away from coal, according to The Gillette News Record.

UW economist Rob Godby was interviewed by Business Facilities on the expansion of Microsoft’s data center in Cheyenne, saying the company’s investments have been a major victory for the state as leaders work to diversify the economy.

The Jackson Hole News and Guide interviewed Jim King, a UW political scientist, about Teton County’s voting habits, which mirror the national trend of older residents voting more than a younger population.

The UW Wyoming Pathways from Prison program was cited as a successful contributor of Wyoming State Penitentiary inmates receiving college certificates or their GED diplomas, according to a Rawlins Daily Times article.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed Erick Robinson, a UW postdoctoral researcher, who contributed to a study that paints a picture of human population over the last 10,000 years.

Among UW releases printed on Sheridan Media’s website were: UW’s Biodiversity Institute and the Draper Natural History Museum hosting the second Rocky Mountain Citizen Science Conference later this fall in Cody; and two UW professors are introducing Gaelic football into their classrooms.

KOWB Radio interviewed new UW rodeo Coach Beau Clark, who has had his men’s and women’s teams in first place going into the final rodeo of the fall season.

A study contributed by Diane Boyle, a professor at UW’s Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing, was cited for its innovative study assessing surgical site infections, according to Electronic Component News.
