Continuing Education

The University of Wyoming - School of Pharmacy was accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as an accredited provider of Continuing Professional Education the summer of 2020. The Mission of the University of Wyoming - School of Pharmacy Continuing Education Group is to develop, conduct, and evaluate educational programs to meet the continuing professional development needs, tools, and resources for pharmacy professionals and pharmacy technicians to better care for the patients and communities they serve.  We do this by providing educational programming that is timely, relevant, and accessible to pharmacist and pharmacy technician audiences, extending their knowledge, skills, and patient outcomes. The group employs a variety of delivery methodologies using both live and distance learning techniques for providing educational content/materials to the targeted audience.

This site will provide course descriptions and registration information on courses available through the UW School of Pharmacy.

Since inception, the group has provided over 70 hours of ACPE accredited CE programs.

Medication Adherence Expertise Course - Medication non-adherence is a major public health problem, and has been for some time. In the United States it is estimated that increased morbidity and mortality due to non-adherence costs over $100 billion a year. The New England Healthcare Institute projected that non-adherence along with suboptimal prescribing, additional unneeded tests and diagnostic visits account for nearly $290 billion dollars in wasted healthcare expenditures This translates into at least 13% of total healthcare spending in the United States. Poor medication adherence can result in adverse outcomes such as hospitalization development of complications, disease progression, premature disability, or death. The World Health Organization (WHO) has described poor adherence as a worldwide problem of striking magnitude. In a report published in 2003, the WHO further described the scope of poor adherence.  Poor adherence affects both men and women of all ages and socioeconomic groups. As the nation continues to age, the risk of poor adherence in the elderly has become a significant concern. This group of Americans accounts for 30% for all prescription medications purchased. The regimens they take are often complex and confusing. The course furnishes 8.0 hours of credit.

Full program information is available on the Medication Adherence Expertise page.

Activity Title: Responsible Prescribing of Controlled Substances — A Pharmacy Perspective

Responsible Prescribing of Controlled Substances — A Pharmacy Perspective - This program considers the challenges faced by pharmacists as they screen opioid prescriptions for legitimacy. The approach of initially identifying “red flags” of illegitimacy, as adopted by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, is examined. The language of the “corresponding responsibility rule” promulgated in federal law is reviewed, with consideration of the meaning of critical words and phrases contained within that rule. An approach to opioid prescription verification is suggested. Using the suggested approach, pharmacists can resolve suspicions of opioid prescription illegitimacy when the circumstances warrant resolution or justify denial of medication when suspicions cannot be resolved. This course offers 2 credit hours.
