Requirements for Masters Program Admission

Department of Political Science | SPPAIS

Minimum Application Requirements

Note that GRE scores are not required for application to the program.

  1. Admission is open to all students holding a bachelor's degree in any major.
  2. Submit the Application and pay the $50.00 Application Fee. The application fee cannot be waived.
  3. Upload all official transcripts (undergraduate and post-graduate); if you are a UW graduate, this requirement is waived. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  4. Upload a one-page personal statement describing your objectives in seeking the degree.
  5. Upload a writing sample of at least 10 pages, such as a paper prepared for an undergraduate course.
  6. Submit contact information for 3 individuals knowledgeable about your preparation and qualifications for graduate education. E-mail addresses of your recommenders will be requested during your online application process.
  7. The Graduate Assistant Application is required, but accepting a GA position is not. Assistantships cover tuition, fees, and student insurance, as well as offer a monthly stipend for students selected as Graduate Assistants and are highly competetive positions.

Additional International Student Requirements:

  1. Confidential Financial Aid Statement delivered to UW Admissions office.

  2. The University of Wyoming's institutional minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 540 (76 iBT). The minimum acceptable IELTS score is 6.5. IELTS and TOELF scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to be considered official.

The following are TOEFL/IELTS alternatives for evaluating English proficiency.

  3. Foreign students, who are non-native English speakers, must pass the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).

The MA Admissions Committee may recommend provisional admission, including specific coursework to be completed, if a student's background is deemed insufficient, but will not consider any form of admission without a complete application.
