Ferric Chloride Modified Thief Carbon is a sorbent designed to adsorb mercury in vapor phase from any source, including adsorbing mercury from flue gas at coal-fired power plants. “Thief Carbon,” a type of activated carbon, is obtained from partially combusted from the furnace of coal-fired power plants. The Thief Carbon is then impregnated with 5 w-%-solution of ferric chloride. The ratio of volume of FeCl3 solution to weight of Thief Carbon is 0.5 ml/g.
Ferric Chloride Modified Thief Carbon can be used in coal-fired power plants and other plants to remove mercury and other harmful trace elements from being emitted into the environment. This will aid in coal-fired power plants being able to meet current and future mercury emissions regulations in the United States.
Ferric Chloride Modified Thief Carbon will benefit coal-fired power plants by reducing harmful mercury emissions. While other methods exist for removing mercury, this method is more cost-effective than existing methods. Additionally, this method yields a similar or higher capacity than impregnated activated carbons at a lower price.
