Mechanical Damping System for Structures

UW ID: 02-006

Description of Technology

The Mechanical Damping System operates as a tuned-mass damper under relatively low excitation of the primary (or attached) structure, and as a tuned-mass and impact damper when high excitation and resulting responses are present.

Applications

The primary use of the Mechanical Damping System is for use in traffic signals traffic signs to prevent galloping caused by wind. This technology will prevent fatigue cracks caused over time.

Features & Benefits

Features include easy installation and maintenance. The system is aesthetically pleasing and there is relatively low noise output. Additionally, the system is capable of providing damping in multiple directions. The system will improve the durability of traffic signs and signals, as well as improving safety for motorists.
