Research Interest

Dr. Yoon’s research focuses on the public health dimensions of gerontological mental and physical health both in the U.S. and South Korea. She is interested in identifying pathways that reduce or prevent the accumulative and negative impact of adversity over the lifespan.

Teaching Philosophy

Dr. Yoon believes that students learn best in a respectful environment where they are given practical applications as well as knowledge. Dr. Yoon’s various teaching experiences help her to understand students’ learning needs better and to teach them more effectively. Also, she tries to focus on how students apply the content they have learned in the classroom to their work as social workers practically and effectively after graduation. She tries to help her students to enhance their capability as social work professionals and people with ethics, people with understanding, and responsibilities.

National Contributions

At the national level, Dr. Yoon has been serving the Korea American Social Work Educators Association (KASWEA) as a board of directors’ member (and secretary of the board) since December 2021. KASWEA consists of about 300 social work faculty working for universities/colleges in the U.S. and nearly 100 students enrolled in social work PhD and Master programs in the U.S. (https://www.kaswea.org/learn-kaswea/leadership-team).

Dr. Yoon has also served on the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) SRPP Awards Committee since January 2023. Additionally, she has contributed as a manuscript peer reviewer for several high-impact interdisciplinary and international journals, such as The Gerontologist and Aging and Mental Health. Furthermore, Dr. Yoon has served as an abstract peer reviewer for the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR), the Council on Social Work Education APM (CSWE), and the Gerontological Society of America (GSA). Her involvement in these roles reflects her commitment to advancing research and scholarship in the field.
