Course: International Social Welfare - A British Perspective (3 Credits)

PROGRAM/COURSE DESCRIPTION:

  • This intensive, exciting two-week, 3 credit study abroad program in London will allow students to experience history, culture, and the richly vibrant environment of London through various site visits, tours, and presentations.
  • Students will learn about the growth and development of social work and social welfare systems in England and understand its relevance in today’s London: “a living laboratory” of multiculturalism, diversity, migration, and globalization.
  • Students will also gain knowledge of social service systems that promote social justice and become familiar with historic, economic, social and political forces that shaped the development of social welfare systems in UK and its impact on welfare systems in the U.S.
  • The course will allow students to increase their awareness of diverse cultures that form the integral multiethnic tapestry of the area and challenge them to move beyond their own ethnocentric perspectives and develop intercultural competence which is necessary to perform in an increasingly globalized society.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Accommodation in homestays with bed and breakfast included.
  • Unlimited London bus and underground travel pass for use in the central 3 zones of London for the duration of the program.
  • Half-day sightseeing tour of London by private bus with the services of a professional guide.
  • Excursion to the impressive Southall Havelock Road Gurudwara and Central London Mosque.
  • Walking tour of London’s multicultural Brixton district immigration tour, Fair Maids, Feminists & Philanthropy tour, and Jack the Ripper tour with the services of a professional guide. 
  • A guided tour of the Houses of Parliament which include the Commons, Lords Chamber, and the Queen’s Robing Rooms, and the Royal Gallery and Westminster Hall.
  • Visit to the Salvation Army and presentation by guest speakers from the British Association of Social Workers.
  • Visit to a domestic abuse charity or support organization.
  • A full-day excursion by private coach to the Southwell Workhouse in Nottinghamshire and with entrance and tour.
  • Guided tour of a late 19th century manor house – a visit to Hughenden Manor, the home of British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli focusing on life in the home.
  • A theater ticket to a West End/Theater production and entrance to the Tower of London.

     IMPORTANT DETIALS:
  • Dates: May 18th- June 3rd  2020
  • Deadline to Apply: Monday, November 15 , 2019
  • Program Fee: $2,495 (may be reduced with no. of enrollment)
  • Open to all majors!
  • Cheney international scholarship is available to all with a minimum of 3.0 GPA
