Paula Weems is UW Employee of the Fourth Quarter

Staff Senate Recognizes Employee of Quarter Nominees

Carlinda Munoz, Dave Stallings, Michael Kottenstette and Paula Weems won quarterly awards in 2012 for outstanding staff service.

But they weren’t the only UW staffers who garnered attention from colleagues. Eighteen others were nominated at least once for their efforts toward excellence in the workplace, and UW Staff Senate believes all nominees are worthy of praise.

“There may be just one quarterly award, but we recognize every nominee as a winner,” says UW Staff Senate President Ben Marks. “A nomination is a clear indication of tremendous work and dedication to the university, and we thank every nominee for his or her commitment to making UW what it is today.”

The 2012 nominees were: Tonya Anderle, David Anton, Bev Arellano, Amy Bey, Beth Buskirk, John Campbell, Elaine Force, Cathy Gorbett, Dave Henry, Cherie Kelley, Becky Meza, Lisa Nunley, Carol Pribyl, Shawn Sheen, Tom Smith, Ryan Sprague, Nicole Wade and Cindy Wood.

The quarterly award, sponsored by Staff Senate, recognizes UW employees for their efforts toward excellence in the workplace. Each quarterly winner receives a cache of prizes, including $500 from UniWyo Federal Credit Union, tickets to UW athletics and cultural events, and a family membership to the UW Art Museum.

Munoz, Stallings, Kottenstette and Weems are automatically eligible for the UW Employee of the Year Award, to be announced April 25 at Staff Recognition Day.

Holiday Food Drive Feeds Four Families

The UW Staff Senate provided food to four families in December to cap another successful holiday food drive.

In 2012, Staff Senate collected about 20 boxes of non-perishable food items from donation locations across the Laramie campus. The food was then equally divided and distributed to selected nominees and their families. All nominees for the food drive must be benefited UW staff members.

Nominations for the 2013 food drive will open during the fall semester.

January Senate Report/Points to Ponder

  • Jim Logue, a senior computer support specialist at the UW-Casper College Center, was elected as president of Staff Senate for the 2013-14 academic year.

  • Regarding the university’s budget situation, Interim VP of Administrative Operations Mark Collins described UW as being in the “top of the second inning of a nine-inning game” and encouraged patience. It’s in the hands of the state legislature at this point, he said, and UW will wait until the session is over in early March to determine its course of action.

  • The UW Employee Handbook is in the process of revision, by the Human Resources Department, for the first time in nearly three years. If you’re interested in providing feedback in the process, please contact your Staff Senator.

  • Staff Senate and Human Resources have collaborated to create the Staff Training and Enrichment Program (STEP), a training and leadership development program designed to impact the performance and motivation of staff.

  • Nominations are open through March 8 for 2013 Employee of the First Quarter. The award, sponsored by Staff Senate, recognizes UW employees for their efforts toward excellence in the workplace. Each quarterly winner receives a cache of prizes, including $500 from UniWyo Federal Credit Union, tickets to UW athletics and cultural events, and a family membership to the UW Art Museum.

  • Staff Senate will soon be seeking donations and volunteers for the 2013 Relay For Life.

Did You Know?

If you overindulged over the holidays—who didn’t, right?—this could be the time to join Weight Watchers. And you won’t even have to leave campus to attend your weekly meeting.

The UW Weight Watchers program meets each Tuesday at noon inside Room 002 of the Wyoming Union. The meetings are for both men and women, with private weigh-ins and group support.
