Applying for DSS Services

Students with disabilities must self-identify and request accommodations.  An individual with a disability is someone with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity such as caring for one's self, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, eating, sleeping, standing, lifting, bending, speaking, breathing, learning, working, thinking, reading, concentrating, and communicating; and/or the operation of major bodily functions.

UW students wishing to receive accommodation services must register with DSS. For more information on the application process, please call our office at (307) 766-3073 (also TTY) or stop by our office in 109 Knight Hall, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, Monday through Friday (summer hours are 7:30 AM-4:30 PM), for application materials.  You may also set up an in-person or phone appointment with a DSS coordinator; materials are available in alternative formats upon request.

Please note: the application process can take a week to 10 days after all materials have been received; please plan ahead to ensure accommodations can be established in a timely manner.

Checklist for Applying and Initiating UDSS Services (4 easy steps):

1. Complete the DSS Application for Services (link below).

2. Gather and send DSS documentation of the condition(s).

If you do not have external documentation, please contact the DSS office at (307) 766-3073 or email to request an appointment.  We can explore other ways to demonstrate a connection between your condition(s) and any academic or program barriers you are encountering or anticipate encountering.

Documentation should be current and explain how the condition(s) affects you, and the academic impacts you may experience.

DSS Documentation Guidelines

Students who need to determine whether they have a condition such as a learning disability, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, etc. may need to seek out professionals to conduct an assessment. Click on the following link to obtain more information on how to seek out an assessment, what to expect from such an assessment, and information on local psychologists who offer such services.

3. Your application and documentation will be reviewed as soon as possible after received. You will be notified by email or mail whether additional information is needed and/or if you qualify for services. If you do qualify, you will be assigned to a DSS coordinator and encouraged to schedule an appointment to begin planning for your accommodation needs.  If you do not qualify, staff would be happy to meet with you to help you explore alternative options for receiving academic and other support while you are enrolled at UW.

4. Call our main office at (307) 766-3073, to schedule your appointment; please bring all course syllabi with you.
