Forming an RSO

So you're interested in starting a student organization? Well, you have come to the right place. Coming to this page is the first step in helping us get your group recognized. In order to start an organization, you will have to follow these steps:

How to start an organization

  • Before you do anything else: Submit a formation notification form. After your submission, a member of the CAC will be in touch to schedule your Orientation Session.
  • To prepare for this meeting:
    • Find a total of seven (7) people who want to start this organization
    • Read the RSO Handbook and UW Regulation 8-234
    • Recruit an Advisor
    • Begin working on your constitution
  • Have an officer submit your registration via Collegiate Link

Please take the time to review our Guidebook on starting a new student organization. It will provide details as to each step. In the meantime, should you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office at 307-766-6340, or by e-mail at

Please be aware that the approval process can take 2-4 weeks depending on a variety of factors such as staff availability, work flow, etc. The more proactive you are in preparing documents and following these guidelines, the quicker we are in processing your request to be recognized.
