About the First-Year Seminar

Image of exploration

All FYS courses have small class sizes and are student-centered. Here, you will begin to develop the analytical and creative skills that will serve you well as you continue throughout your baccalaureate degree.  These are not passive learning environments:  in our First-Year Seminars you will engage in team-work, investigation, analysis, discussion and reflection.

The FYS Learning Outcomes and Objectives

No matter the discipline you have chosen, we know that there are certain key skills that students must develop in order to be successful at college, and help build a strong foundation for future careers. The themes of our First-Year Seminars are varied, but all will focus on helping you to acquire and develop the ability to:

  • Access diverse information through focused research, active discussion, and collaboration with peers;

  • Separate facts from inferences and relevant from irrelevant information, and explain limitations of information;

  • Evaluate the credibility, accuracy, and reliability of conclusions drawn from information;

  • Recognize and synthesize multiple perspectives to develop innovative viewpoints;

  • Analyze one’s own and others’ assumptions and evaluate contexts when presenting a position;

  • and Communicate ideas in writing using appropriate documentation.

And last, but not least, by the end of the course, you will have worked with your peers on a creative research project that will allow you to showcase all that you have learned.
