The world needs more thoughtful, skilled experts to study these challenges and prepare the next generation of educational leaders to implement evidence-based solutions throughout the education landscape.

About Educational Leadership

Offered predominately at a distance with a one-semester residency, UW’s Educational Leadership Ph.D. program equips you to contribute to the country’s educational future through research and as a post-secondary teacher of the next generation of educational leaders. As a Ph.D. student in Educational Leadership, you will acquire the research, scholarly writing and post-secondary teaching skills for careers in academia, school districts and research institutions.

Educational Leadership Ph.D. Degree Program Highlights

UW’s educational leadership Ph.D. program offers students with K-12 experience the opportunity to shape the future of American education through in-depth scholarly work, teaching and organizational change.

Here are some reasons to consider the UW Ph.D. program in Educational Leadership:

Online/residency. Take part in a doctoral-level program that’s offered primarily online. UW requires one semester on campus to facilitate your growth as a future higher education faculty member. The residency also gives you the opportunity to work closely with UW faculty in their research and teaching endeavors.

Flexible curriculum. Take general coursework across the UW College of Education and specific classes in educational leadership. Other classes are customized to the interests and career goals of Educational Leadership Ph.D. students.

Faculty practitioner-scholars. Learn from and conduct research with professors who have worked in leadership positions throughout the spectrum of K-12 school systems. UW’s educational leadership faculty are active scholars, who conduct research in areas such as implementing change, teacher and principal evaluations, instructional leadership and systemic change in principal and superintendent preparation programs.

Minor. Incorporate a graduate minor in qualitative or quantitative methodologies into your Ph.D. program.

Accredited. Choose an accredited program. The College of Education at UW is accredited nationally by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). In addition, the educational leadership program meets the National Educational Leadership Preparation (NELP) program standards.

Assistantships. Look into the possibility of a graduate assistantship. Departments across campus offer assistantships to full-time, resident graduate students. In addition to stipends, assistantships offer faculty research and college-level teaching opportunities.

Travel grants. Apply for travel support to help subsidize some of the costs associated with attending or presenting at professional conferences.

Scholarships. Apply for financial support. UW offers graduate scholarships for educational leadership majors, such as:
