AlcoholEdu Deadline for UW Freshmen Is Oct. 19

October 8, 2009

Incoming University of Wyoming freshmen are required to have completed Part 2 of the AlcoholEdu course by midnight Monday, Oct. 19.

Those who do not complete the course on time will have their class registration for spring semester delayed until the last day.

AlcoholEdu is an online alcohol education program used on more than 500 campuses. The course takes place in two parts. Part one, completed prior to arrival on campus, uses science-based research to teach students about alcohol's effects. Part two focuses on the students' experiences with alcohol at college and their application of the information they were given in part one.

"I thought it was going to be like high school, you know, 'Don't drink; drinking is bad,' but it wasn't," says sophomore Christopher Martin, who completed the course last year. "The overall message was to stay safe while drinking, to drink responsibly and know your limits."

AlcoholEdu, which is in its second year at UW, is managed by the AWARE (Alcohol Wellness Alternatives, Research and Education) Program.

"AlcoholEdu is being received positively by students," AWARE's program coordinator, Lena Newlin, says. "We hope this course will ultimately correlate with the reduction of the negative consequences associated with alcohol use within the UW community."

For involvement opportunities with alcohol awareness on campus, AWARE's A-team meets 11 a.m.-1 p.m. the first Friday of each month in the Wyoming Union Senate Chambers. All are invited to attend. For more information, call Newlin at (307) 766-2187.
