The University of Wyoming fall Cultural Programs concert series continues with baroque ensemble Rebel, Friday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the performance, in the Fine Arts Center concert hall, cost $20 for the public and $17 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available by calling the Fine Arts Center box office at (307) 766-6666 or at the Web site www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Last week, Rebel performed at the Morgan Library in Manhattan, and earned the following remarks from the New York Times: "Many period-instrument players these days have embraced an almost modern smoothness of tone, as if the astringent and sometimes rough-hewn timbres of early strings were an embarrassment . . . Rebel has resisted that trend. Its sound has a gritty texture that, together with the group's penchant for brisk tempos and sharply articulated phrasing, keeps its repertory sounding bright and energetic rather than merely charming."

Named after French composer Jean-Fry Rebel (1666-1747), Rebel launched its career in 1991 by winning first prize in the Fifth International Competition for Ensembles of Early Music in the Netherlands.

"You may have heard Rebel on one of its frequent National Public Radio appearances," says UW Cultural Programs Director Cedric Reverand. "Most recently, the group did a splendid performance of Handel's 'Messiah.'"

The group's program "Kingdoms & Viceroys: Music of Spain and its Dominions" will also feature soprano Marta Almajano and baroque guitarist Richard Savino.

The fall concert series concludes with Lisa De La Salle (Nov. 20), a pianist who will perform with the Boston Symphony before coming to Laramie. The spring concert series begins Jan. 28, 2010, with the dance group Pilobolus.
