UW Hockey Club Falls in Shootout Against Colorado

December 6, 2010

The University of Wyoming hockey club suffered a hard-fought shootout loss Friday night to the University of Colorado at the Laramie Ice and Events Center.

For the second time this season, the Cowboys (5-7-1) made the Buffaloes (16-1) work extra time for a victory. Colorado, which leads the Pacific Region of Division III of the American Collegiate Hockey Association with 32 points, beat UW 5-4 in overtime last month.

The Buffs haven't lost since a 5-2 setback Oct. 14 at Utah State.

Matt Schulz (Casper) scored his team-leading 22nd and 23rd goals of the season, T.J. Peters (Jackson) recorded a pair of assists and Robert Kola (Colorado Springs, Colo.) made 52 saves to front the Cowboys' effort.

Jake Bates (Jackson) and Mitch Mayfield (Powell) also scored regulation goals for UW. After a scoreless overtime, Erik Blomberg (Parker, Colo.), Mitch Nelson (Sheridan) and Billy Ross (Boulder, Colo.) netted shootout goals.

Blomberg and Seth Farrell (Longmont, Colo.) added assists in a losing cause.

One of the Cowboys' top offensive threats each of the past two seasons, Blomberg made his season debut after suffering a knee injury in the team's alumni game in October.

UW returns to the ice this weekend with a pair of home games against Division II Metro State College of Denver.
