UW professor emeritus Wayne Hubert is president of the American Fisheries Society.

When he retired from the University of Wyoming at the beginning of this year, Wayne Hubert could have easily ended his 40 years of service with the American Fisheries Society (AFS). Instead, he took on the duties as president of the organization that counts more than 9,000 members in 60 countries.

Hubert's dedication to the AFS comes as no surprise to his many colleagues in Wyoming and around the world. They recognize his many contributions to fisheries science.  Hubert, professor emeritus of zoology and physiology, has held many positions in the organization, including president of the Iowa and Colorado-Wyoming chapters and was editor of one of the AFS journals, the North American Journal of Fisheries Management.  He edited several books published by the society, most recently the third edition of "Inland Fisheries Management in North America," a text used in university courses.

Hubert says he has a great affection for the society and its members.

"They are an incredible group of enthusiastic and motivated people, and that includes students, young professionals and my cohort of old timers," Hubert says.  "Their work is increasingly needed as population growth, spread of cities, water development, energy development, climate change and other things put greater and greater stresses on fish, aquatic systems and the world in general.  It is quite an honor, but also a huge responsibility to be in a leadership role."

All the while, Hubert was accomplishing a great deal as a professor in the Department of Zoology and Physiology and leader of the Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.  During his career he advised or co-advised 80 graduate students and was author or co-author on more than 275 peer-reviewed journal articles or book chapters. His research focused on fish and their habitat needs, with a strong emphasis on fishes of Wyoming's mountains and plains.
