Campus Construction Update for Week of July 31

These are among the construction activities scheduled July 31-Aug. 6 at the University of Wyoming:

Steam Shutdown -- The annual campus steam shutdown will continue through Aug. 15. A temporary boiler has been placed on the sidewalk northwest of the Washakie Center and will remain in place until Aug. 17. Please use caution around equipment in this area.

Parking Lot Striping -- Parking spaces along King Street will be striped Monday through Wednesday. Crosswalks will be painted around campus. Barricades and traffic cones will be used in the painting areas.

Campus Painting -- Handrails throughout campus will be painted beginning Monday. Wet Paint signs will be posted. Latex paint will be used. If you happen to get paint on your hands or clothes, use water to remove it before it dries.

The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities scheduled for the week:

Recreation Fields Closed -- The recreation fields at 22nd and Armory streets will be closed to the public for turf rebuilding.

Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center Landscaping /Bureau of Mines Alley Improvements (Scheduled completion Aug. 31) -- Only emergency vehicle traffic will be allowed in the alley between the Berry Center and the Bureau of Mines Building; pedestrians, and bicycles must use alternate routes as concrete work in the alley along with contractor vehicles have created hazardous conditions. Proceed with caution in this area. New landscaping, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) walking paths, outdoor benches, lighting and a traffic gate are being installed by the alley. Green roof planting is completed and trees and shrubs are being planted this week.

Ivinson Building Abatement/Deconstruction -- The deconstruction contractor has extended the fencing around the Ivinson Building, which will encompass 17 more parking spaces to the south and all the parallel parking on the south side of Ivinson Street. Deconstruction will begin Aug. 1.

Energy Resources Center (1020 Lewis Street, scheduled to be completed in summer, 2012) -- Lewis Street will remain closed during construction. Foot and vehicular traffic will not be permitted across the site. Site demolition and excavation is scheduled is under way with completion scheduled for midweek. Underground utility work will begin upon completion of site demolition. Foundation preparation will also begin. Frequent construction traffic for delivery of materials and removal of demolition waste will be ongoing throughout the week. Parking will be limited in areas around construction including the drive along the west of the Engineering Building. The construction office is set up on site. Fencing has been reconfigured to secure the site and storage area.

ESCo Project (Energy Services Company) -- Long Energy Services Company will not be on site this week.

State Fiscal Stabilization Fund Modernization, Renovation and Repairs (Scheduled completion, fall 2011) -- The project focuses on major maintenance items, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) improvements and classroom improvements. Buildings involved are as follows:
Agriculture Building: Final clean up and substantial completion inspection (room ready for intended use) for the classrooms: Fire alarm has been tested and passed; ceiling access panels will be installed; changing door hardware will be on going; Animal Science Building: Fire alarm test completed; finish work will continue; installation of marker boards will continue; seating will conclude Aug. 13; Arts & Sciences Building: Substantial completion inspection of classrooms; Aven Nelson: Substantial completion inspection of classrooms; Engineering Building: Final fire alarm test on Wednesday, finish work continues in classrooms; Geology Building: Carpet and base installation in classrooms; Health Sciences, Pharmacy Wing:  Continuation of mechanical installation, fire alarm system and fire protection system; Hoyt Hall: Install gypsum board on metal framing, electrical rough-ins; Physical Sciences Building: Ceiling grid and lighting installation on the fourth floor office spaces; drywall and painting at shaft locations in offices; fire sprinkler installation ongoing; mechanical installation; fume hood installation for priority 1 and 2 when possible.
A large crane will be on site the week of Aug. 8. Access will be extremely limited in that area. The crane will lift the air handler to the roof. Users and occupants of the building are requested to vacate the north half of the building during lifting operations. Exact date will be announced when scheduled.

Student Apartments -- The contractor has set up fencing around the three-block area south of Willett between Crane and Soule. Demolition work has begun on the existing streets and sidewalks. There will be a total of 15 apartment buildings and a Commons/Maintenance Building. Arrowhead will be closed through Aug. 5 from 22nd Street to the east side of Crane Street for a new sewer line.

Visual Arts Center (22nd Street and Willett Drive near the Centennial Complex, scheduled completion late fall, 2011) -- There will be frequent construction traffic for delivery of materials throughout the week, and foot and vehicular traffic will not be permitted across the site. The west-bound lane of Willett may be closed for work along the street. Site grading and concrete will start in advance of landscaping. Work will be starting on site and drive modifications along the west parking lot. Concrete foundation wall work is complete. Excavation and underground utility work including off site utility work is nearing completion. Watch for this work outside the contained construction area. Additional materials and equipment will continue to arrive onsite for window wall installation, masonry work, site and interior construction. Construction of interior wall framing and installation of mechanical/electrical systems is under way on the first and second floor east. Drywall and painting is under way on the second floor west. Roof trim out is ongoing on the west side and lower level roof on the south as weather allows.

War Memorial Stadium Parking Lot (Completion: Aug. 2011) -- The parking lot and 20th Street from the stadium to Grand Avenue will be closed until Aug. 15. Paving work is scheduled this week. Fencing and base will be reused for temporary parking in the Summit View area.

Summit View Apartment Deconstruction Phase II -- Rough grading for the four blocks east of 22nd Street has begun with heavy truck traffic in the area. Part of the six-block fencing has been removed along Crane and Arrowhead, but still remains along 22nd and Willett Drive, so pedestrian and vehicle traffic will still need to go around this area.

The UW Physical Plant reports the following activities for the week:

Swimming Pool Closure -- Half Acre pool will be closed through Aug. 21 for cleaning and maintenance.

South Parking Lot (15th and Spring Creek) -- Traffic control is now in place. Curb and gutter will be poured over the next couple of weeks. The bus pickup and drop off area is on the northwest corner of the lot. Limited parking will be maintained on the north end of the lot during the initial phase of construction. The Still and coffee kiosk will remain open during construction.

Aven Nelson Building -- Masonry work around the exterior of the building is ongoing. The west parking lot is closed for the construction staging area.

Merica Hall -- Work continues in the basement next to the north stair well to repair a leaking condensate pipe. Please use caution in this area. Signs are posted.

King Street -- Concrete work continues north of Washakie and the residence halls to remove and replace sections of concrete. Work will continue into August. Traffic control and barricades will be placed.

Agriculture Building -- Removal and replacement of asphalt in the alley north of the building to address sloping around ADA parking spaces is complete. Painting and placement of curb stops will occur next week. Traffic control and barricades will remain in place.

Stimulus Project -- Abatement is ongoing in the Physical Sciences and the Pharmacy buildings. Abatement in the tunnels and crawl spaces of Education, Coe Library, Hoyt Hall and Agriculture is complete. Insulation work continues in Coe Library and Agriculture.

Rochelle Athletic Center -- Re-roofing project continues with staging on the north side of the weight room, and equipment storage on the east end. Please use caution around equipment.

Earth Sciences Building-- Re-roofing on the Earth Sciences roof is ongoing. Staging is on the south side. Prexy's Pasture north sidewalk and northwest campus service drive will be used for vehicular access and deliveries when available. Alternate route access will be Student Health/Prexy's access point and west Prexy's Pasture sidewalk.

Education Building -- Re-roofing project continues with staging on the north side. North entry sidewalk will remain accessible. Access to the northeast parking lot will be restricted due to re-roofing of the Education Library. Please use caution around staging area.

Education Annex -- Re-roofing project continues with staging on the west side alley. The alley will be closed when crane loading occurs. Please use caution around equipment.

Engineering Building -- Re-roofing project continues with staging on the south side between Petroleum Engineering south entry and Old Engineering main entry. Prexy's Pasture north sidewalk and northwest campus service drive will be used for vehicular access and deliveries when available. Alternate route access will be Student Health/Prexy's access point and west Prexy's Pasture sidewalk.

Foundation House Garage -- Re-roofing of the garage west of the Foundation House is under way. Parking west of the garage will be closed during the project.
