The author of a new book about Jackson Hole elk is this week’s speaker for the weekly summer lecture series at the University of Wyoming-National Park Service (UW-NPS) Research Center. The center is located at the AMK Ranch in Grand Teton National Park.
Bruce Smith, who worked for 22 years as a National Elk Refuge biologist, will discuss issues addressed in his book, “Where Elk Roam: Conservation and Biopolitics of our National Elk Herd,” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 12, at the AMK Ranch, located north of Leeks Marina. Smith’s book is the first published for a general audience in 60 years about Jackson Hole elk, their ecology and management -- and the controversies surrounding the congregation of thousands of elk on feed grounds each winter. In what has been described as one of North America's most complex wildlife management situations, those controversies include disease, predation and hunting.
The UW-NPS Research Center provides a base for university faculty members and government scientists from throughout North America to conduct research in the diverse aquatic and terrestrial environments of Grand Teton National Park and the greater Yellowstone area.
