Campus Construction Update for week of Aug. 5

Workers continue to make progress at Sullivan Plaza on the northeast corner of Prexy’s Pasture.

These are among the construction activities scheduled Aug. 5-11 at the University of Wyoming:

Traffic Alert -- The Wyoming Department of Transportation Laramie advises that on Monday morning, Aug.6, the Clark Street viaduct will close for repair. Improvements include replacing 160 feet of curb, resetting guardrail and some mending of the deck. The viaduct will be shut down at both ends until the last week of August. During the closure, bicyclists and pedestrians can detour via the Garfield Street footbridge over the railroad tracks. Motorists can detour at Curtis Street on the north end of town or the Third Street Interchange at the south end.

Power Outage -- An electrical outage for Earth Sciences, Geology and Bureau of Mines (WRI) buildings is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4, from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities for the week:

Student Apartments Bison Run Village (Scheduled completion this month) -- A grand opening for the new Bison Run Village Apartments is set for Monday, Aug. 13, at 3 p.m. The new apartments are in a three-block area south of Willett Drive, between Crane and Landmark Village. The community center and apartment model unit are now open Mondays through Fridays. Residence Life and Dining Services maintenance staff members have moved into the community center's maintenance area. All of the apartment buildings are now complete, with punch-list work ongoing with scheduled completion Aug. 10. There are a total of 15 apartment buildings (332 beds) with the community center and maintenance building.

Museum Closed -- The UW Geological Museum is closed for renovation and is scheduled to reopen at the beginning of the fall semester.

Ivinson Parking Lot Expansion -- Final subgrading is complete. New concrete curb and gutter is complete, along with 75 percent of the paving. Light pole bases are poured with light pole installation this week. Expect heavy truck traffic on 10th and 11th streets. The new north half of the parking lot will open late this week, which will open up 55 new parking spaces including ADA. Access will be from both 10th and 11th Streets. The southern two parking areas will be closed for parking and affects 48 parking spaces during that part of construction. The project will add 67 additional parking spaces to the existing parking lot.

UW Office Annex (21st Street and Garfield, scheduled completion Sept. 30) -- The project involves partial renovation of the lower level of the west wing for improvements to offices and other adjacent multi-use spaces. Demolition is completed, and interior wall framing is under way. Remodeling is under way in the conference rooms and adjacent spaces. These rooms will be closed until the end of September.

Landscape Projects -- Construction work has begun on Sullivan Plaza, Public Edge Practice Field, Public Edge Southwest Campus Entry Marker and Bureau of Mines landscape, and will continue during the summer months.

Sullivan Plaza -- Access to the south entrances of the Education Building and surrounding pedestrian pathways will be restricted by construction through Aug. 24. Plaza pedestrian paving, stone and boulder setting, and reconstruction of the front entry stairs is ongoing. A portion of the parking area north of Wyoming Hall will be barricaded through Aug. 7 for construction staging purposes.

Public Edge Practice Field (Tailgate Park) -- Work is substantially complete. 20th Street adjacent to the field, as well as adjacent portions of 20th Street and Grand Avenue pedestrian sidewalks, is reopened. Remaining minor and accessory work may continue through Sept. 28.

Public Edge Southwest Campus Entry Marker -- Adjacent portions of Ninth Street and Grand Avenue pedestrian sidewalks may be temporarily closed by construction through Sept. 28. Earthwork began the week of July 22.

Bureau of Mines Landscape -- The vehicular access and pedestrian corridor between the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center and the Health Sciences Center may be restricted by construction through Aug. 24. General landscaping work is under way.

Counselor Education Training Clinic (Education Building, scheduled completion Oct. 22) -- Renovation construction work in the northeast portion of the basement of the Education Building is under way. Demolition activities will predominate through Aug. 3, with general renovation construction following. Construction staging will restrict access via the northeast building entry and to a portion of the parking area northeast of the Education Building.

University of Wyoming/Casper College Student Union (UW/CC Student Union, scheduled completion November 2013) -- Construction has started with site preparation and foundation systems. Structural steel frame is under way, and interior concrete stair towers are completed.

Energy Innovation Center (formerly ERC, at 1020 Lewis St., scheduled completion October 2012) -- Access to main campus will be between or through Earth Sciences and the Berry Center. Lewis Street will remain closed during construction. Parking will be limited in areas around construction, including the drive along the west side of Engineering. The access from main campus, along the west side of Engineering to Lewis Street, will be closed during this phase of construction. The west end of the ramp, behind Engineering, will be closed. Handicapped parking has been relocated to the northwest corner of Lewis and 10th streets, with access through the Berry Center or Earth Sciences Building to main campus.

Interior spaces are being finished throughout, with a substantial portion of interior painting being finished. Door and hardware installation is under way. Installation of lab equipment and casework is nearing completion on the first and second floors. Storm drain installation along the south and east will continue. Work continues on the south retaining walls. Concrete paving/curb and gutter on the south will begin this week. Interior painting has begun, followed by floor finishing. Minor utility work will be ongoing. Expect congestion from delivery trucks, and take extreme care when walking around trucks waiting in the street.

West War Memorial Stadium (scheduled completion July 31) -- Installation of stair risers, along with new slip-resistant coating, is complete. The east War Memorial Stadium lower walk surface also is complete. Punch-list work is scheduled for this week.

White Hall Renovations -- Renovation and abatement work is ongoing. Abatement is proceeding from top floors to bottom floors, and is 90 percent complete. Electrical and renovation demolition continues on the sixth through 10th floors. The west parking lot will be closed until summer 2013. Underground electrical excavation will continue for the next few weeks in front of Washakie. This will affect half of the sidewalk and partial access into Washakie. Pedestrian traffic will need to use caution.

College of Business marker board installation -- Marker board installation will continue this week and last approximately two weeks.

The UW Physical Plant reports the following activities for the week. Please direct questions to the service desk, 766-6225.

Steam Shutdown -- The annual campus steam shutdown is under way. A temporary boiler has been placed on the sidewalk northwest of the Washakie Center and will remain in place until Aug. 21. Tunnel doors will be open and barricaded for air flow. Please use caution around barricades.

Corbett P.E. Building -- The pool is closed for annual maintenance through Aug. 27.

Concrete Repairs -- Work is scheduled at the north entrance of the College of Business, in the area of the Classroom Building, the southeast entrance of the Wyoming Union, the southeast area of Prexy’s Pasture, the south area of the College of Agriculture Building and north of Stores at the Service Building.

Foundation House -- The fan is operational. An exhaust louver and intake damper will be installed later. Use caution when the attic scuttle is in use.

Aven Nelson Building -- Gutter repair and paver replacement is scheduled for later in the week. Project staging will occur in the parking lot west of the building. A lift will be required to hoist new materials onto the roof. The west building entrance and sidewalk will not be accessible during lift operations (approximately two hours). Please use caution in this area.

Centennial Complex -- Consultants will continue the moisture intrusion investigation on upper portions of the cone roof.

Fine Arts (Crane Dance Studio) -- Due to flooding, the dance studio is closed until further notice. Concrete wall grouting, caulking and damp proofing is in progress on the northwest side of the building. Backfill and re-grading are scheduled to occur next week. Please use caution around equipment in this area.

Prexy’s Pasture, Geology and Engineering -- Irrigation pipe installation will be occurring on the south side of the buildings. Please use caution around equipment in the area.

Rochelle Athletic Center -- Construction is under way on the hydrotherapy pool room renovation in the football locker room. Construction area will move to the training room. The staging area will be at the southeast corner of the building. Access to the area will be limited to authorized personnel.

Campus -- New sod is scheduled to be placed at various locations around campus. Sprinklers will apply additional water to ensure successful transplant of new turf.

Knight Hall -- Renovations in the Registrar’s Office will continue through Aug. 14. Storage pods have been placed in the parking area north of Knight Hall and on the sidewalk to the west of the building. Please be aware of moving activities in this area.

Central Energy Plant -- The fenced construction area will remain through Aug. 20. The sidewalk adjacent to 19th Street remains closed to pedestrian traffic. Please use the sidewalk on the east side of 19th Street.

Prexy’s Pasture -- Exterior lights may be off around Prexy’s Pasture due to construction of the Sullivan Plaza in front of the Education Building and an underground bore in the area of Cheney Plaza.

Jacoby Golf Course -- Construction continues on the east campus drainage project at Jacoby Golf Course. Inlet work will begin and traffic on Grays Gable will be routed accordingly. Installation of sod at Pond #1 will necessitate the frequent application of additional water. Signs are posted at the affected holes and in the clubhouse. The affected holes will be off limits during construction hours (7 a.m.-5 p.m.) for the remainder of the construction period. Please use caution in the work areas.

College of Law Building -- Lighting replacements are ongoing in the Law Library. This project will help UW in its continued effort to be more energy efficient. The work is funded, in part, by energy rebates from Rocky Mountain Power. The student lounge area remodel is complete. Please use caution around the work area.

Knight Hall -- Lighting material have arrived. Electricians will coordinate schedules with building occupants. This project will help UW in its continued effort to be more energy efficient. Law Library -- Book and microfiche moving will continue.

Honors Center (10th and Ivinson Streets) -- Painting and trim work are ongoing inside and exterior painting is ongoing. Construction of the addition continues outside. Sidewalks around the house are closed. Please use alternate routes.

Wyoming State Vet Lab -- Landscaping work continues in front of the round building and by the main entry sign to the site. New signage has been installed. Please use caution in the work area near the driveway.

Biological Sciences Basement -- Window installation and touch-up painting are ongoing. Please use caution around the construction area.

Sigma Phi Epsilon -- Brick replacement will continue. Please avoid the deck area and use caution around equipment.

Sigma Chi -- Installation of a fire suppression system is under way. Construction activities are occurring from the building south to the driving lane of Fraternity Row. Please use caution around equipment and materials in the area.
