UW Faculty Member Receives Honor from Alma Mater

September 24, 2012 — A University of Wyoming faculty member who is renowned for his work in preparing mathematics educators is being honored by one of his alma maters.

Larry Hatfield, the Wyoming Excellence in Higher Education Endowed Chair in Mathematics Education Professor, is the recipient of the College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from Western Michigan University’s Department of Mathematics.

Hatfield will receive the award in a special ceremony at Western Michigan Oct. 5, a day after he delivers a departmental colloquium address.

The award is based upon Hatfield’s outstanding record of achievement in mathematics education and teacher training.

After earning master’s degrees from Western Michigan (1966) and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota (1969), Hatfield has had a distinguished career. It has included two years at the National Science Foundation as well as professor appointments at Columbia University and at universities in The Hague (Netherlands) and Perth (Western Australia). He came to UW in 2009 from a 42-year career at the University of Georgia, where he received the Josiah T. Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor of Mathematics Education award. He has written more than 70 books and articles, and presented papers at more than 120 national and international meetings.

As a faculty member in UW’s College of Education, Hatfield has been working to develop a new mathematics education Ph.D. program, among other tasks. His hiring was made possible through the Wyoming Excellence in Higher Education Endowment, established by the Legislature in 2006.
