Steady enrollment growth is continuing at the University of Wyoming, with 12,873 students enrolled for the spring semester.
That number represents an increase of 171 students from the 2011 spring semester and 34 students from the 2012 spring semester, according to a report presented today (Thursday) to the UW Board of Trustees.
After all Outreach School numbers are recorded, student enrollment should again surpass 13,000 by the end of the spring 2013 semester, says Sara Axelson, UW vice president for student affairs.
Spring enrollment normally is lower than fall semester numbers. UW set a new enrollment record in the fall of 2012, with close to 14,000 students taking classes on the Laramie campus and through the Outreach School.
“It’s wonderful to see that we’re continuing to attract more and more students who recognize the tremendous value that UW offers,” Axelson says. “And they’re coming from across the globe. All of our internationalization initiatives are raising awareness of UW around the world.”
Here are some highlights from the new enrollment report, with comparisons to the 2012 spring semester:
--Undergraduate enrollment increased by 34 to 9,701 students. Graduate and professional enrollment stayed at 3,172.
--The number of international students rose by 63, or 8.6 percent, going from 733 to 796.
--The number of minority students increased by 31, or 2.6 percent, rising from 1,204 to 1,235.
--Of the 1,578 new full-time freshmen enrolled in the fall of 2012, 76 percent successfully completed the first semester -- a number consistent with previous years.
Early signs point to continued growth in the next academic year. Director of Admissions Shelley Dodd says she is seeing an increase in fall 2013 admitted applicants from Wyoming and out of state.
“It is encouraging to see so many Wyoming and nonresident prospective students visiting campus this spring,” she says.
