Trash 2 Treasures Fundraiser Scheduled for UW Nordic Ski Team

April 29, 2013

Members of the University of Wyoming Nordic ski team will collect any unwanted items from UW students as part of their "Trash 2 Treasures" fundraiser and community project.

Team members will collect items through Sunday, May 12, when students check out of residence halls, but will continue to accept donations throughout the summer.

"Possible donated items include furniture, refrigerators, microwaves, lamps, rugs, storage items, pillows  -- almost anything except clothes," says UW Nordic co-Coach Christi Boggs.

Drop-off locations will be in the Classroom Building, Wyoming Union information desk, Cheney International Center and University Apartments.

Arranged pickup times for items are available by emailing uwski@yahoo.comm, Boggs at cboggs@uwy.edu or team member Sierra Jech at sjech@uwyo.edu.

"Someone from the team will come and pick up the items. All you have to do is tell us where and when," Boggs says.

After pickup, the team will clean and store donations during the summer, and sell the items this fall. During move-in weekend for the fall semester, the team will set up a tent on Fraternity Row with the collected items, selling them at a reduced price to UW students and the public.

"This will be a great opportunity for people looking for dorm-room items and apartment or housing items, especially for foreign exchange students and freshmen," Boggs says. "Any items that are not sold will be donated to charity organizations around the Laramie community."

The UW Nordic ski team is a student-run RSO, with Boggs and Rachel Watson serving as volunteer coaches. The money earned will go toward race fees, ski wax, travel, lodging and food expenses throughout the season.

Each year, the ski team raises about $30,000. Boggs says Campus Recreation club sports help by donating a preset amount, which helps pay for national dues and entry fees for the year-end United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association Nationals (USCSSA).

The UW men’s team won the USCSSA national championship last month, while the Cowgirls were national runners-up.
