A retirement celebration for University of Wyoming Department of Animal Science Head Doug Hixon is set for Friday, June 28, from 3-6 p.m. at the Wyoming Territorial Prison (WTP) Horse Barn.

Deadline to RSVP is Thursday, June 20. RSVP online here or call 766-4214 or 766-2224. Print out and present the invitation on the Web page for free access to the WTP; otherwise, the admission cost is $5.

Hixon came to UW in 1982 after receiving a Ph.D. in animal science at the University of Illinois. He worked as a professor, researcher and extension beef cattle specialist for 19 years; and has served as department head the past 12 years.

Last year, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Western Section, American Society of Animal Science, and also received the UW President’s Faculty Stewardship Award for building external relationships and promoting fundraising programs.

In an interview with the Laramie Boomerang, Hixon said that meeting people was the most rewarding aspect of his work.

“That’s really the main thing you remember: The people you’ve worked with and the relationships you’ve built with those people over the years,” he said. “I have a lot of friends all over the state that I interacted with during those early years, and we’ve maintained those friendships, and hopefully they’ll be maintained throughout my entire life.”
