September 27, 2013 — These are among the construction activities scheduled Sept. 29-Oct. 5 at the University of Wyoming:
The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities for the week:
Wainwright/Willett Bungalows (Future parking lot, scheduled completion Oct. 4) -- Asphalt paving is tentatively scheduled for this week, with a possibility of opening the parking lot Friday, Oct. 4. The west entry to the parking lot to the College of Law Building and the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (northwest of Beta House from Willett) is closed to establish a staging area to construct the new Bungalow parking lot. The north entrance from Willett, to the west side of the College of Law Building, remains open and is the only way for vehicles to enter the lot. Concrete curb and gutter work is complete. Parking lot road base installation is continuing on the west end. Landscape irrigation piping and electrical installation will continue over the next three weeks. All landscape plantings will be held off until next spring.
Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center (22nd and Grand, scheduled completion fall 2014) -- The third-floor deck will be formed and poured at the south portion of the building. Stone masonry will be laid up at the north and east walls of the north portion of the building. The Event Center air handling unit will be set in the north portion of the building. Agriculture Buildings A, B and D, (on Lewis between 12th and 13th streets) -- The contractor was able to mobilize early. Fencing of the site is complete. Deconstruction has begun on buildings B and D and will continue until late November. Asbestos abatement is complete. Parking areas between Ag A and B, and north of Ag A, will be used for staging by the deconstruction contractor. There will be no “A” and “U” parking in these areas. Access to the alley along the north side of the Agriculture Building will remain open. Parking along the south side of Lewis between 12th and 13th will be used for truck loading.
ESCo Project (Energy Services Company) -- Long Energy Services Co. employees will work on control wiring and new VAV box programming, along with air balancing, in the Agriculture Building, which may impact building occupants. Workers will wear identifying badges. Work on the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory boiler replacement is nearly complete. Contractor staging is on the west side of the building.
Brown Lot Underground Wiring (22nd and Willett) -- Underground boring and trenching of conduit is complete. Wiring installation along with fixture placement is complete. Overhead wiring removal is scheduled for this week.
Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (Fine Arts Building, renovation and expansion, scheduled completion December 2014) -- Additional project information is available here. The parking lot on the east side of the UW Performing Arts Center is closed, is being used for construction staging and will be converted into a green area following construction. Building visitors should use the parking lot on the north side of the building. Beginning Monday, Sept. 30, through early November, there will be a large crane in the southeast part of the north parking lot. Steel erection will begin at the end of the week. Those entering the Performing Arts Center must now enter through the doors on the west side of the building. This will be the entrance for all building operations, including classes, ticket purchases and performances, until construction is complete. The east side of the building is a secured construction zone with restricted access. Footing excavation, rebar placement and pouring continues, along with foundation walls. Grade beam exaction and forming have begun. Backfill on the north is ongoing. Heavy truck traffic will be frequent near War Memorial Fieldhouse, 22nd Street and Willett Drive, and along the road west of the College of Law.
Biological Sciences Building Mechanical Modifications (Final completion is set for October) -- Building users are encouraged to use the northwest entrance to avoid construction activities. Interior work will continue throughout the week. Work will focus on the third and fourth floors. New HVAC equipment startups are complete, with remaining tie-ins ongoing.
Enzi STEM Facility (Lewis Street between 10th and 11th streets, scheduled completion June 2015) -- Lewis Street remains closed between 10th and 11th streets. The preliminary site work has been completed, and bidding for the subcontractors for the building and site development is in progress. Contractor mobilization will be mid-October, and site work, utilities and foundations will start shortly after mobilization. Utilities for STEM will be done in conjunction with planned North Campus utility work. Please note that this project is being managed and administered by the State Construction Office.
Golf Practice Facility (Scheduled completion December 2013) -- Construction activities for the project have commenced in the vicinity of the Jacoby Golf Course clubhouse. Utility work in support of the project will require temporary and changeable traffic detours of the Jacoby parking lot and adjacent portions of Willett Drive as work progresses. Please observe all posted traffic control and construction signage. Earthwork and foundation footings are underway at the project site adjacent to the practice greens, the driving range tee and the 10th tee. Play at Jacoby Golf Course will be largely unaffected during the initial construction phase. Please observe fenced construction limits and be mindful of additional vehicular traffic accessing the construction site and adjacent areas of the course.
Education Annex -- Literacy Research Center and Clinic (lower floor, Education Annex; scheduled completion January 2014) -- The lower (first) floor of the Education Annex is closed for construction. Access to the alleyway and portions of related parking east and south of the Agriculture Building is closed, and a temporary access/egress detour has been established west of the Agriculture Building. The pedestrian sidewalk in the Education Annex vicinity is closed on the south side of Lewis Street, with pedestrian access rerouted to the north side of the street at the established construction limits. Parking in the vicinity is closed on the south side of Lewis Street at the construction limits. Project activities include interior framing and rough-in, as well as foundation and site work related to the exterior building addition, structural steel erection, and improvements in the former alleyway. Work on the improvements in the former alleyway will result in increased construction traffic in the form of concrete trucks and other heavy equipment. The construction area is closed to all unauthorized parties. Please observe all posted traffic control and construction signage.
Education Annex Canopy (Scheduled completion October 2013) -- Construction activities continue on the project, including the erection of structural steel canopy framing and related components between the east entrance of the Education Annex and the north entrance of the Education Building, as well as interior renovation of the corridor in the vicinity of the Dean’s Office in the Education Building. Normal access to the Education Building and Ed Annex is open, with temporary protections in place. Vehicular access and parking -- north and east of the Education Building and the Ed Annex -- have reopened to normal traffic, except that Lab School pick-up and drop-off activities are prohibited in this lot. Ongoing construction activities may require temporary provisions to be put into place with limited notice to accommodate continuing construction. Pedestrians and motorists should exercise caution in the area.
Half Acre Gymnasium Addition and Renovation (Scheduled completion spring 2015) -- Full project information is available at www.uwyo.edu/ha-renovation. Half Acre Gymnasium remains open and accessible via the west entrance. The day-lot parking area and roadway immediately east of Half Acre Gymnasium is closed. Temporary day-use parking has been established in the lot east of the Wyoming Union.
Construction work for Phase I, consisting of the demolition and reconstruction of the east portion of the existing building, continues this week with deconstruction as the focus. Construction and staging areas north, south and east of the existing building have been established and are closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic, except that which is construction related. Access to Prexy’s Pasture from the east Wyoming Union parking lot between Half Acre and the Wyoming Union is closed until further notice. Please use alternate routes through the Wyoming Union or between the Union and Coe Library. Temporary staging/construction areas also may be established, with limited notice, near the west entrance and along the pedestrian pathways north of Half Acre Gymnasium between Prexy’s Pasture and Willett Drive as required by the ongoing construction-related tasks.
Significant deconstruction activities are underway toward demolishing the east portion of the existing building. Considerable noise, dust and debris will potentially be created by the activities, although operational precautions are in place to mitigate any impact beyond the immediate construction area. Heavy truck traffic will be frequent on Willett Drive west of 15th Street and along the perimeter of the Wyoming Union parking lot.
White Hall Renovations -- White Hall has reopened as a modern residence hall with new carpet, inviting lounge space, computer labs, study rooms, new furnishings and lights, and new fire suppression systems. Remaining punch-list items will continue over the next few weeks.
University of Wyoming/Casper College Student Union (UW/CC Student Union, scheduled completion November 2013) -- The primary building enclosure is complete, allowing interior construction activities to proceed on or ahead of schedule. Interior finish construction is progressing throughout UW/CC third- and fourth-floor spaces. Technology and furniture, furnishings and equipment (FF&E) packages will be installed in coming weeks, while pre-completion observations are moving toward final completion and subsequent occupancy of the facility.
The UW Physical Plant has 279 projects in progress valued at more than $21.8 million. Following is a list of ongoing construction activities in areas of campus that may impact you. Please call the Service Desk at 766-6225 with questions.
Ross Hall Cafe -- Ross Hall Cafe renovations continue. Use caution in the area. The contractor is completing punch-list items. Construction of the facility is complete, and furniture will begin arriving soon. Residence Life & Dining Services will schedule the official opening.
Campus -- Irrigation sprinkler systems are being blown out for the season. Overspray onto sidewalks and driveways could create slippery conditions; please use caution. Maintenance is scheduled to be complete by late October.
Bureau Of Mines Building -- The air handling units located in the penthouse that supply air to the building have been shut down to replace the steam heating coils. The air handling units will be down until Oct. 14.
West Campus Electrical Relocation -- Rocky Mountain Power crews are removing old overhead wiring, poles and other equipment on Lewis Street in the area of Ninth to 11th streets. Work is expected to continue through September.
Arena-Auditorium -- Replacement of damaged corridor skylights on the west side of the building will continue as weather permits. Use caution in this area.
Law School Parking Lot -- A steam tunnel vault lid is being replaced at the southeast corner of the Law School/Fine Arts parking lot. Barricades will remain for asphalt patching. Please use caution around equipment and construction fencing in this area.
General Storage Addition (Scheduled completion December 2013) -- Foundation work is ongoing. The south side of the existing building is accessible from the west driveway. Shipping and Receiving operations will continue throughout construction. Please limit traffic on Gibbon Street between 15th and 19th streets to users of the building only. Always use caution around the construction site and construction vehicles, and observe all posted speed limits.
Centennial Complex (American Heritage Center and Art Museum) -- Roof replacement operations continue. Scaffolding on the cone portion of the building will remain in place until November. Roof envelope assembly is complete, and metal panel installation and glazing of the east side skylights is ongoing. Main entry and elevator access remains open. The main project staging area is on the north side of the building. Use caution in work areas.
Geology Building -- Lighting upgrades throughout the hallways are ongoing. Please use caution around crews and equipment in this area.
Landmark Apartments -- Roof replacement and attic upgrades are complete. Verification of all punch-list items is ongoing. Please use caution in work zones.
Visual Arts Building -- Domestic hot water work is complete.
Coe Library -- Painting operations are complete.
Physical Sciences Building -- Replacement of univent filters in hallways is complete.
Office Annex -- Air handling work is complete.
